All you need to know about The Maris and Otter
As you wander down Western Road, you’ll soon find yourself passing The Maris and Otter – a well-decorated pub located a stone’s throw away from Norfolk Square.
Formerly known as The Revelator, the pub was renovated a few years back by Harvey’s Brewery and – in fact – is the only Harvey’s Brewery pub you’ll find anywhere within Brighton and Hove.
Renowned locally for its charming ambience and great range of locally brewed beer, The Maris and Otter is a classy joint with one of the most unexpectedly good ranges of beer you’ll come across. Its toilets are also some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the UK, so it’s worth visiting for that reason alone.
Food and drink at The Maris and Otter
Which types of drinks is it good for? 🍺
If you like cask ale (and Harvey’s cask ale in particular) you will absolutely LOVE The Maris and Otter.
With a strong selection of beers from Harvey’s Brewery taking front and centre, including Sussex Best Bitter, Armada Ale, Old Ale, XX and Pell’s Pale – their new swan-based brew – you’ll be left spoilt for choice.
However, if you’re less of a real ale drinker, there are plenty of other options to choose from as well.
From Camden Town Brewery beers to local brews from Unbarred Brewery, the pub also serves a great range of cocktails. So don’t let the fact it’s a Harvey’s pub make you think it only serves beer. It does, but it also does so much more.
Does it do food? 🍔
Absolutely! From crispy flatbreads to loaded fries and fresh salads, The Maris and Otter offers a delicious range of pub grub. They also often alter their menu and add certain special options, so keep an eye on their Instagram page to see what’s currently being offered.
You can also discover their menu here.
Does it do roast dinners? 🍗
Yes, they do! While we wouldn’t say they’re one of the best roast dinners in Brighton, they’re certainly a crowd-pleaser and often a lot better value than other roasts you’d find around the area. When we had ours, it only set us back £15.95.
Features and amenities at The Maris and Otter
Does it have a beer garden? ☀️
Unfortunately, there’s no beer garden to lounge in. But have no fear – there are a few picnic tables out the front where you can soak up the sun and watch the world go by with a pint in hand.
Is it dog friendly? 🐶
100%. The Maris and Otter is actually a bit of a dog’s paradise, with treats, water bowls and plenty of other furry friends to say hello to.
Does it have any games or activities available? 🎲
While it may not have the same extensive range as either The Caxton Arms or The Robin Hood down the road, if you’re a fan of board games, The Maris and Otter have got you covered.
They also often host various events, including live music, comedy and games nights, which only adds to the pub’s fun vibe. Why not take a look at their website to see what’s on?
Does it run a pub quiz? 🧐
Yes, every Tuesday night! So don your thinking caps and get your team ready for a fun-filled evening. It’s quizzing time.
Does it show live sport? ⚽
Not really… they showed the Euros 2024 tournament when it was on and they do have some live screens. But we wouldn’t exactly call it a sports pub – The Lion and Lobster a bit further down the road would be a better shout for that kind of vibe.
How far a walk is it from the nearest train station? 🚂
The pub is approximately a 19-minute stroll from Brighton train station. However, you’ll pass several other great pubs along the way, including all the ones around Churchill Square, so it’d make a great addition to a Brighton-based pub crawl.
How would you describe The Maris and Otter...?
...to a friend? 🗣️
Imagine a small but classy Harvey’s pub where cask beers reign supreme.
With exposed brickwork, a mural dedicated to the brewing process and an ongoing roster of events, The Maris and Otter also have some of the best toilets we’ve ever encountered. In fact, they’re so good, it’s made us rethink whether toilets should be added to our Brighton pub rating system…
...as a film? 🍿
